What video card are you using? I followed the ATI XgL/Beryl installation guide and it worked (nearly) flawlessly on my Dell laptop. That is one of the biggest problems with Linux is its hardware support (not usually a fault of the coders though), or lack thereof. You could (maybe you already do) search the ubuntuforums.org for a solution too. I've fixed a messed up X11 session (my xorg.conf file was messed up) by starting up without any GUI and using Vi to fix the problem.
"Ah well, looks like I get to reinstall Ubuntu again. I think I'll stay away from this guide from now on."just replace your modified files with their backups...why is it so many people think you need to reinstall for such a menial task as replacing maybe 2 files?
Ubuntu Guide (ubuntuguide.org) is updated for every version of Ubuntu. It is not just for Edgy.It is as current now as when the first version was released. No other Ubuntu Guide is updated like this.

Nice, this site has helped me out before, and I know it will be helpful again.

Good guide for using Ubuntu for the first time. I still use it occasionally.
