ubuntuforums.org — Over the last week or two, UbuntuForums staff members bodhi.zazen, me and others have been contributing towards a comprehensive security primer. We are proud to finally announce its public release, as a sticky in the Security subsection of UbuntuForums. I hope it will be a useful resource for everyone for months and maybe even years to come.

Here's an example of a strong password that you don't need to write down: Sk!rm1sh3DYou see the trick is let your fingers do the remembering. Like playing the piano.

You can also use password generator programs like "pwgen" to generate decent 8-character alphanumeric passwords that are "pronouncible" or at least a lot easier to remember than a totally random password, and arguable more secure than leet-speak-based transformations of words.

Yes, you do, but the point is to be careful which repositories you add. First, the version of the package you seek may be tainted in the 3rd-party repository. Second, depending on your system configuration, the 3rd-party repository may be enabled permanantly on your system, so you might find yourself unknowingly installing other (possibly tainted) programs from it. Finally, software in 3rd-party repositories usually doesn't go through the same security/stability checks as a distribution's official repositories. This can lead to system vulnerabilities or instabilities (e.g. users are highly discouraged from simultaneously enabling both FreshRPM and Livna repositories in Fedora, as their packages don't play nice with each other)
