reuters.com — The FCC now estimates $20 billion to $350 billion may be needed for wireless and landline infrastructure, depending on the speed of service to 'wire' the country with highspeed internet. The potential costs dwarf the $7.2 billion set aside in President Barack Obama's massive economic stimulus package.

Maybe I should clarify since my second sentence was poorly worded. Having a bunch of telcos OWN the network infrastructure would be as retarded as having a bunch of "road companies" own the roads.

Why don't we go back to 56k while we're at it?

Considering texting has such a high profit margin... yeah.

I see you don't think Internet access is a vital part of "the empire".

Your dreaming. There will be nothing in social security at that time. People should be planning their own retirement and health care for the future.

@FairDunkumMate: Sounds like a good plan. Here in Ontario, Canada we have two companies that basically own the infrastructure. Bell (phone lines) and Rogers (cable lines). The reason why we are able to have 50+ ISPs in our area is because the CRTC forced Bell to rent out their lines to 3rd party vendors to ensure competition. Furthermore, the CRTC sets the rental price. The setback: Since Bell still owns those lines (it was actually paid by the taxpayers decades ago), Bell is trying to get the CRTC off of their backs by stalling on network upgrades. If the CRTC caves to Bell's demands, Bell would be able to set their own prices and drive most of those ISPs out of business leaving consumers with limited choices. This is why I support nationalizing the infrastructure. The public should own the infrastructure and rent it out to ISPs to compete. This makes a lot more sense to me in terms of efficiency and increasing competition

Third world countries do not need WIFI. Spending that much money is absurd. We will be using our time eating dirt and looking for other kinds of food. The tubes will be a thing of the past.
