latimesblogs.latimes.com — In honor of the 200th anniversary of Abe's birth, the U.S. Mint is planning to release four new Lincoln pennies this year. Of course these days, given the rising price of zinc and copper, it costs about 1.4 cents to make a penny.

Why do you call your cents pennies?Ok I suppose I can drag up some kind of pre 1776 connection, but I am surprised it has survived that long,we have pennies all the way up to a pound and just as useless

I tried to wrap my mind around it, but I don't think what you said it correct. Because the gov't has to pay someone to mint those coins (somebody works in the mint, right?), they have to pay them in... currency. So they spend money in order to pay people to create more money. Doesn't sound like a recipe for deflation...In times like this a quote by Ludwig von Mises comes to mind (paraphrase): "Only government can take someone as useful as paper, slap some ink on it, and make it totally worthless." >:D

Hourly rate required to earn 1 cent per 5 seconds: $0.01 * 12 * 60 = $7.2You can't find somebody to pay you seven dollars twenty per hour? o_0Money earned in five seconds when earning $40 per hour: $40 / 60 / 12 = 0.06A little under six cents in five seconds. So if you're earning $40 per hour and it takes you fives seconds or more to slow down, bend down, pick up the five cents, stand up, and get back up to speed, then you're wasting money. That said, I'm ignoring here the health benefit of the incidental exercise built into the activity, so it would be irresponsible of me to advise against picking up the coin based on that calculation alone!
