cybercrimelaw.org — There is an increase in the reports of U.S. border agents searching and even seizing laptops with confidential company or personal information. Courts say it's legal. Next time you travel, you may want to leave your laptop at home.

It's simple, ENCRYPT the data. If companies are so concerned about data theft and losing company/trade secrets, they'll start encrypting data on mobile hard drives.

Problem is, what if border agents ask you to produce the encryption key? You refuse - you are denied entry into the country (if you are foreigner) or your laptop is seized until clarifications are made (if you are US citizen.) Reports of similar cases where encryption key or password has been demanded start to appear.

I think those similar cases are bulls**t. Honestly, if I encrypted my data correctly, it would take someone with some fairly sophisticated computer skills to even know I had encrypted the data.

You are right - hiding your encryption volume is a solution.
