usatoday.com— Over one third of the 100,000 students questioned felt the First Amendment went "too far" in guaranteeing freedom of speech, press, worship and assembly.

OK, @entropyman & @jagdhund and everyone else making the argument that free speech is not used _responsibly_, please detail what excesses it is you're talking about. The example of shouting "fire!" in a theatre is clearly outlawed, and no-one wants to change that, so you must be referring to something else. What, exactly, is it you're complaining about? Are you - and let me take a wild guess here - complaining about things such as New York Times publishing articles which, while true, can reasonably be expected to lower the general populations resolve to fight in Iraq?Or would it be, say, Al Jazeera showing videos of an insurgent sniper killing US troops in Iraq?Or Penn & Teller calling people "assh**es"?Or perhaps we're talking the gay kiss in Grand Theft Auto?Or Janet Jacksons boob?I'm just curious what it is you want outlawed. Just saying that you want "excesses" and "abuses" of the first amendment outlawed is vacuous. What presently allowed excesses is it you feel should be outlawed? Exemplify.
fellow americans, prepare yourselves: the chinese are coming.the nation of the united states of america is insolvent.the greed of the chinese deters them from floating the US economy in the fashion they have been by buying up bonds - it is no longer a wise investment.japanese grace, and their yen, are leaving too - US bonds are no longer a wise investment.for it or against it, we allowed the bush administration unfettered power to demolish the innate rights guaranteed by our constitution.the constitution either is, or it is not.i say, "it is, and not only is it, i consider it also mankind's greatest achievement in our recorded history."our constitution has saved us time and again from tyranny. this time shall it save us too. so, if even true, one-third of our society is so shallow as to not even recognize the quality of life its principles provide, the other two-thirds may still uphold our constitution.i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america, and to the republic for which it stands: one nation, under the constitution, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.and, yes, i do believe in God.
Quoted from Spidoman - "Of course they don't have much experience in reality! They are in high school! Do you want to call kindergartners idiots who don't deserve freedom just because they haven't experienced enough to really understand yet?"So what you are saying is that high school kids of today are on the same maturity level as kindergarten children? The difference is in the expectations from a 5 - 6 year old, and a 14 - 18 year old. If you expect them to know nothing, they will learn even less.Take away the high schoolers American Idol and cell phone then poll them again. :)
Sure some elementary school teachers are doing their job above and beyond what's necessary... The problem comes from the lazy tenured teachers, and the bad High School Teachers, and of course... the parents who think that school is enough learning for their kid, and don't involve themselves with their kids beyond the bare minimum.

Funny how it doesn't seem to work both ways when one is wearing ideological blinders.
