guardian.co.uk — America's drug tsar raised the stakes on drug testing in schools yesterday, suggesting that it could come to be seen as normal required and "responsible behaviour" in the same way that some US schools routinely test all pupils for tuberculosis. Wow.

The war on drugs is failing, that it if was ever intended to reduce the amount of drugs a person could buy. when I was in high school most everyone I knew could (if they had the inclination) go out and buy any illegal substance on the market with little or no effort. And yet those same teens can not easily get alcohol unless they know someone who is over 21. UAs will not stop drug use, they show false positives, and there are ways (sometimes very dangerous ways) of making them show a false negative. that and the only drug to stay in your system more than a week is pot.

The founding fathers wanted civil liberties over safety, because they knew sacraficing liberty for safety was a slippery slope towards a police state. It's frustrating to hear people misrepresent what this country was based upon. People change history to fit their personal views, like when people claim the Bible says "god hates fags"...

I'm not saying they didn't have good ideas. They did.Just don't treat them like they're infallible gods and use one quote from them to 'own' an argument.

We are giving up a little more each day. You and I have the power to say "NO." Get off the XBox and call your congressman. Start a website, get involved with local politics. The less we're involved, the more decisions the old white men in tall buildings are going to make for us. Remember what Patriotism is about... love of one's country, but not necessarily the government. @ tarzidil: props on the quote... I've been looking for that.

Man I thought high-school was degrading enough without: "Piss in the Cup!"

The US is a mess and the swine are lining up at the trough to eat this garbage. The word protect is getting a little over usedThe patriot Act "to protect". Unconstitutional spying "to protect". Invasion of countries "to protect"Global militarization "to protect"Drug testing in schools "to protect"National ID card "to protect"One question : What protects us from the government?

"The religion most kids have these days is MTV."You've missed the boat gramps, by about 10 years. May I send you some literature from the New Church of Xanga?

tells me that legislators relaly haven't learnt s**t from the prohibition ammendment. In terms of making a substance illegal makes the use of it go up and then makes the price of it go up thus the crime goes up..

Yeah our education system needs to be reformed into one that works for a post-industrial society. Which means one that promotes cirtical thinking because factory jobs are going overseas on a daily basis. Since in post-industrialised societies the jobs tend to involve more critical thinking.

I think drugs need to be legalized but even at that its still the parents resposibility to see if there kids are getting high not schools. I think the only time schools have any authority is if the kids is doing or has drugs while on school grounds thats all. I dont know whos to blame in this one, the ever growing number of irresponsible parents expecting schools to raise there kids or the governemnt for making these ideas up.

random drug tests for senators!
tech42erMay 20, 2007
Someone should tell darkzealot that high school is mandatory, as opposed to his "real world" where you only have random drug testing if you agree to it. That's why people say the constitution doesn't apply to high school, because in high school, you have no choice.

@smartyIt sometimes seems like that's what these people want coming out of the system, sheep. Realistically, though, they'd probably rather have competitive, smart, innovative, people so we should change the system. Personally, I say either vouchers or privatization.
tech42erMay 20, 2007
@kuzotzSchool is actually mandatory, so there's ZERO choice in the matter.
