blog.wired.com — Tighten your seat belts. Data transfer is going into overdrive as the ubiquitous Universal Serial Bus, better known as USB, prepares to make a tenfold jump in speed and it will most likely mean the death of the competing standard known as FireWire.

It's out there, you just have to look for it. It just doesn't get the same attention as USB 3.0 (you know, like firewire 400/800 doesn't get the same attention as USB 1.1/2.0).

USB is a failed technology. I am sure many of you have never experienced 30 - 40 mbps transfer speeds when using USB2.0. Firewire and ESata were/are much better options.

High speed is the new 11.

There was at least one monitor made that could use a USB 2.0 connection in addition to DVI and VGA (Samsing 940UX). HDMI and Display port still have higher bandwidths than USB 3.0, though, (10.2 and 8.64 Gbps, respectively) and can still get faster in the future as we transition to higher and higher resolution displays. They also only have to be high bandwidth in one direction (to the monitor), unlike USB and FireWire, which have to have the same bandwidth in both directions.

Usually there's a USB symbol to mark the top of the connector.

> "Most newer external USB drives are powered through the USB cable eliminating the need for carrying around additional power cables or power pack."Will USB 3.0 have enough power to spin up a 3.5" drive? Or will it only power 2.5" drives... negating the speed increase?I love my USB powered external 2.5" drive. But portability is key, the thing ain't very fast, so I only use it for portable storage.
