multichannelmerchant.com — You wouldn't think of something as benign as avoiding a left-hand turn could conserve fuel, but Atlanta-based United Parcel Service (UPS) swears by it. In fact, the parcel carrier has technology in its systems that help map this out routes that minimize the number of left turns the driver has to make.

Hmmm...neither UPS Brown or UPS SCS or UPS Freight use RDID to track their packages/shipments/freight. It is all done by barcode and scanner. It is nice except when the scanner misses a package, and then you have to guess whether the package is actually on the outbound aircraft or floating around the hub somewhere...

I just think that it was probably due to just being in London! I'm a field engineer and have to "travel" (I don't like to use this word as i spend more time startionary then actually moving) around central London regularly, and you do spend most of the time snarled up in traffic regardless of wheather you try to avoid a certain turn type (beit left or right!)I think it is a good idea and after all a small saving accross such as large orgainisation has to add up to some good savings so fair play to them!

BassJunkie - I think you missed the joke. Just think long and hard why right hand turns would not be efficient in Britain.

i never thought about this and would have never but with all the shipments they make now it makes sence.

This should be part of the defensive driving curriculain high schools.I was surprised that ABC news did a report about this tonight and their reporter didn't even mention anything about the reduced number of accidents this would cause. And because you are less likely to hot someone head on,the accidents would also be less serious.I don't know how a reporter could do this story and not think of that. They should test reporters for common sense before hiring them, especially at the national level. Too many schools are just passing people with "honors" because they can remember a lot of stuff for a very short period of time.I just looked and there is nothing about this on the ABC news website for some reason (?)WRZccdogpark at yahoo.comDogpark-National-NewsPhiladelphiaNewsMedia

I think the tire use would be more with left turns, not because of the distance, but because of the amount of wear on the tires with the acceleration to fit in between the cars.

I have been a UPS employee for over 30 years and have been a driver for over 25. That "right hand turn" stuff is a load of crap. It could never work. Using right hand turns only wouldn't even allow me to get back to my center in the evening.
