boingboing.net — FTA: UK campaigners NO2ID this morning enlisted the help of bloggers across the world to spread a leaked government document describing how the British government intends to go about "coercing" its citizens onto a National Identity Register.

It is chilling to read the coldly thought out tactics for persuading people this is a good thing.Critics of this scheme are getting lots of ammunition for the argument against a National ID.The biggest one being that people will not trust the Government to securely and responsibly handle their information, especially in light of the recent and well publicised huge losses of peoples confidential data from government agencies. ? A silver lining to those clouds. As long as people are neither complacent or apathetic it should be possible to stop this.

...and the American government is not far behind. The real ID act got bipartisan support. For the Americans here, here the list for how each member voted: <a class="user" href="http://www.votesmart.org/issue_keyvote_member.php?cs_id=14570&sort=vote">http://www.votesmart.org/issue_keyvote_member.php? ...</a><a class="user" href="http://www.votesmart.org/issue_keyvote_member.php?cs_id=V3461&sort=vote">http://www.votesmart.org/issue_keyvote_member.php? ...</a>

Everybody in the f**king senate voted for the Real ID. These people are all in collusion to destroy our rights. Actually, that's not exactly true. It's a little less sinister and a lot more cynical than that. They vote for this s**t just to seem tough on "terror" come election time. Who in their right mind would vote for something like the Real ID? It's such a selfish thing to do, and it's all done for political gain.I was at Kinkos just the other day, and it got me to thinking: What if they start requiring ID's to log on to the Internet? Like from your house I mean. They probably have that planned for somewhere down the line. I have a PC that's been in storage since 2003. In it are some of my writings. As soon as I learned about the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act I knew what would follow it, and I wrote it all up in Word docs. I keep a journal as a note to the future, of everything I think will go wrong if we don't change course. So far so bad. Most everything I've written down has come to pass. We're in for some deep s**t if we don't stop acting like pansies that need to be coddled by politicians. Most these D.C. bums don't even have a record to stand on, and people still buy into their bulls**t promises. It's like we're a bunch of f**king masochists.I'm not scared, though. I've got guns. I've got bullets. I've got a place to keep the family safe. And most of all, I've got a healthy fear of living under the boots of fascists, that's not going to let me tolerate it. Hold on tight fems and fellas. And vote right.
