dailymail.co.uk— A British farmer built an entire mock castle behind a screen of hay bales and lived there concealed for four years to evade planning regulations.

It's all fine and good if you just want to see the UK's countryside left undeveloped but you are willing to go that extra step and get government involved. Who's for you to decide what's pretty and what isn't? I for one find civilization far more pretty than plants or animals. Who's for you to decide that having a pretty countryside comes before people having good lives the way they see fit? I for one would much rather see the housing shortage end and people being able to decide where they want to build a home than have a pretty countryside.
This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die! Spartans! Ready your breakfast and eat hearty... For tonight, we dine in hell!
wow i cant believe people are complaining he probably made the property value of everyone around him go up they should stop complaining... LET HIM KEEP HIS CASTLE!!!
My god coherentbabel. Wise up. You cant build s**t in britain full stop without planning permission. Its nothing to do with saving money or any of the other anal reasons supposed in this thread. You cant even build a wall in your back garden unless its under a certain height. 2 metre approx. You can build with glass without permission, ie a greenhouse or a conservatory extension. But you cant extend even your existing property, never mind build a new house. The "green belt" as its known is the precious existing land left which hasnt been urbanised and is very precious in this densely populated limited area island. The states will take maybe hundreds of years to face the same shortage of nature so thats why you dudes dont get it.The castle guy would have had little hope of securing planning permission even though it is his own land so thats why he tried to find this loophole which he hoped would be failsafe.I think he would have little chance of keeping it, even though most people in the country including myself believe he should be able to live there happily. But this guy has already had run ins with the planners before. He built some kind of leisure park without permission which includes a go karting track and a lot of other s**t which they are telling him to pull down alreadyHe seems to have more money than sense, but fairplay to him. I hope he finds some other loophole. He found some archaic law saying any englishman is allowed to build a castle so he's going to write to the queen and tell her the castle is ready to defend the country and her realm etc. and is available to the state if ever needed!! this guy gets better.the precious little conservation areas left need to be preserved as best as humanly possible so most brits only have a bit of a moan about planning permission, but understand it needs to happen

I think I've found the hidden castle on Google Earth. There is a report from last year of a Surrey County Council planning meeting refusing retrospective permission for a dwelling at Unit 7 Honeycrock Farm Axes Lane Redhill SurreyAnd if you check the location at 51°12'17.76"N 0° 9'0.80"Wthere's a large blue tarpaulin covered in tyres. On Google maps it is:http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=5 ...

There are a lot of petty tyrants in "homeowner's associations" all over the USA these days, too.-jcr

funny how jippo scumbags can build things without planning permission, but a self respecting hard working farmer cant have this. let him have it

nanny laws! I thought our laws were made to serve the greater good, not vice versa?
