I have a Graphite iMac (I think it was called the DV SE or something along those lines - 400 mhz or so) set up next to my work machine. I LOVE running two machines at once, it is a whole new level of freedom. I can watch a DVD on the iMac, or simply run my "personal" processes it (IM, blog-reading, music streaming) to leave more processing power available on my work machine. It also makes it far easier to test web code as I debug it. I almost sold this thing, but now I'm glad I didn't.
Hell yeah they're still usable. I've got two running Tiger Server as I write this. One server (400MHz G3) is running my web site, email (with virus/spam/rbl), DNS, FTP, Remote Installation, Remote Desktop, and a couple o' other stuff. The second one (333MHz) is running Asterisk, Wildfire, XGrid, and a couple o' other stuff as well. These machines are still capable. Good stuff, thinking of eBaying more!! Just remember, LOTS OF RAM will do the trick.
i've upgraded the hard drives in bunches of these and have never had heat be a problem. i wonder if its got dust or something on it. panther should run better than jaguar.
yeah......mines just sitting underneath a desk in the office. great compbut I got a mac mini with 2gigs ram connected to my 40 inch lcd tv. which is great for friends to browse on and play music.the imacs were great tho.maybe ill bring it out
"with every release of Mac OS X, performance improves and the computer feels faster"Yeah, like OS 10.5 gonna give your ancient iMac a PCI Express graphics card, DDR2 RAM, S-ATA HDD. Face it folks, pre-G4 Macs are unusable. No chance for accelerated Quartz graphics, making even resizing windows a pain in the arse.
All these posts, and not one person with a pre-iMac machine?I used a 5400 (603e PPC, first sold around 1996) until about 2 years ago when it's demise finally pushed me to upgrade to a shiny new iMac. And in the time while I waited for my order to arrive, I used a Color Classic "Mystic" (CC with a 575 board, 68LC040 @ 66MHz.)I got a new board for the 5400, but it mostly sits around waiting for the day I cram the machine's guts into another Color Classic.
Wow - I've been dugg down because I bought a Windows machine? Or because I gave my iMac to my GF?I needed a computer that was a helluva lot faster than the old iMac was, and in December, when we still didn't quite know what Apple was doing, I had to make a hard decision - so I bought a cheap PC. I don't regret my decision, it works. (mostly - it's a bit cranky) When Apple get around to releasing so meting other than an iMac or Mini for a desktop - I'll be selling this beast, and getting one of those.Does that make the Mac fanboys happy?
This will tickle the mac fanboys to death. My pc(p4 1.5ghz) is fooked by a virus so I am using an old g4 450mhz. It is great I like it better (it does crash though), I am seriously thinking of getting a macbook now. I wish they would release a 12 inch though...
I also have a blue iMac 540 DV+ with 1GB of RAM on board but no other mods to speak of. The computer runs great, I haven't installed Tiger yet but it sounds like a good idea. The only problem is, I didn't take care of the monitor and it has dimmed quite a bit. I could use the built-in VGA port and buy a flat panel, but instead I am going to do an extreme mod based on a an old DIY article from MacAddict. I will give you a hint: it involves a hard-shell backpack, a QWERTY keyboard, and a MyVu personal media viewer.

Why would you have to pay $1,500? New intel Macs cost only $599
