iphone phanboys, GPS is nothing new. Nokia's been doing it for ages. web-assisted, bluetooth-assisted, hooks up with garmin, turn by turn, simulation, voice guidance, etc.Nokia FTW.
That would be correct for a true GPS, but the iphone uses crappy agps which requires more than just the satellites.. often defeating the very purpose of GPS.
As long as the app contains all the map data, it might be fine. I once took my iPhone 3G on a 1.5 hour trip running the embeded MAPS program. By the time I reached my destination, I had 1/4 battery left. That might seem fine to some, but keep this in mind. My battery had a full charge when I started, and anticipating the heavy draw of the constant 3G, GPS, and an always on LCD, I had it powered off my car adapter. The iPhone cannot win a power war when utilizing both data and GPS services. So, like I said, if the map data is part of the app, it could be fine.
