youtube.com — Johnny Cash did a stark cover of this song with a striking video. In the video, the 71-year old Cash appears very fragile as he sings this from his home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Cash wore no makeup, & there was no attempt to make him look younger. Trent Reznor was very impressed by Cash's take on his song & quite moved by the video (The Video)

You don't need to tell me jack about the music industry, I know that many popular songs are covers, I didn't state otherwise (i.e. read before you bitch). I was cutting down JC, but just making the point that TR was the creative person that wrote the original song and made it popular with the NiN video. If it wasn't a great song, then JC wouldn't have used it. I think the JC song is ok but nothing special, but the JC video is what made the JC version extremely popular and well deserved of awards, but in reality it wasn't JC that did the video editing for his video. If you look further back at "Pretty Hate Machine" which shipped in 1989, I am still very amazed that is came out during the 80's. PHM is proof of the ground-breaking talent when most other popular groups were copying the long hair 80's music style.

Johnny Cash sucks, he is too old and his songs are too hillbilly. To even mention his name with Reznor is a sin!

"Hurt" says all you need to know about what life takes away. What it ALWAYS takes away in the end. A song like that is a treasure because it vocalizes what we all feel but somehow can't say. Of course the Cash video blew me away too. That song has been in my head for a couple of years now."-- Stephen King, October, 2004 Interview

I think Johnny Cash's music is totally boring and think NIN's version of this tune is awesome.
