osnews.com — Linus Torvalds is seriously losing it. I no longer use Gnome or KDE but they both have their benefits. Torvalds is a kernal hacker not a UI guy. Maybe he should just zip it. .com .org. shhh I said zip it. ziipp iiit. ziiiippp.

Personally, I prefer GNOME. I tried KDE a few times, but none of the prefrences are in obvious places, prompting me to run all over the place looking for trivial stuff like the panel background. Also, most of the KDE UIs are just not well designed. They've got all the buttons in your face and it always takes a few second to find the button you want, whereas with gnome I can find the functionality instantly. With all due respect, I don't think a desktop environment is not supposed to be built to make my life more challanging. I think that the role of the desktop environment is to make it as easy as possible for the user to do whatever they want to as efficiently as possible, and currently GNOME fits the bill (for me).

screw these pointless KDE vs Gnome fanboy rants. what we need is a good old fashioned vi vs Emacs flamefest!

fsck whatever he sez, no one has to use kde if they don't want to. but just because torvalds is a kernel guy doesn't mean hes not entitled to recommend his choice gui desktop environment. no digg just to spite you

tadeiste -> aint choice great? this "common desktop" initiative gives me the heebie jeebies. i want choice - i like it. let gnome be gnome, kde be kde, and lets just get the friggin' audio stuff sorted out. there's about 3 or 4 audio daemons on different distros - lets get THAT sorted out once and for all. the UI is a side issue.

I don't like the idea of having one common Linux desktop and nothing else. GNOME seems to be aiming for the ease of use thing, similar to Mac OS X. I personally hate GNOME and OS X (waits to get jumped by Mac nazis), but if it is good for grandma or my little sister, then that is great. The beauty of Linux is being able to have a choice. You don't get that choice in Mac OS (which is why I will never buy a Mac), so you are stuck with the shiny happy interface. You can have a little bit of a choice in Windows (bb4win, bblite, etc...), but it is kind of a pain. I think there should be a Linux distro that aims strictly for desktop use. It should have an easy to use default desktop (GNOME), but if I don't like it, I can change to KDE, E, XFCE, or whatever I like to use. Different desktops have different goals, and that is a good thing, no matter what Linus may say. What would make them even better is if they learned to share some common resources.

you can make KDE look like Gnome but you can't make Gnome look like KDE...it is far more configurable. Those who say it looks like windows just haven't changed any of the default settings...but then again you use Gnome which has very few options...nautilus sucks (spatial sucks)...you can run all your gnome apps in KDE..blah blah blah...damn gnome fanatics!!

Torvalds recently made a statement about what things would be. Not a lot of things, but a couple important ones. He IS the project leader, and he has the Power to back it up. If he is to keep it online with his concept, then he is gonna have to have some real power to ~suggest~ how things should be.Sometime, someplace and somewhere, there ALWAYS has to be someone in charge. It just does not work any other way. Decision by committee is really ridiculous, in my view....I say, go for it Linus!!!! It's your baby and you gotta keep these geehaws in line...Cyborgcheck
