itbusiness.ca— A computer science facility that had been running without a hitch for years is shut down as a Microsoft system is set up across the board. Was it a knock against open source, or just classroom politics?

I would think that the change is based on the type of software they plan to use, I know its hard to swallow but industry standards are what schools decide on, MS Office and Adobe Photoshop are industry standards, so thats what the school is going to teach.
I guess most of the comments on Digg are coming out of the US. Despite all our sparkle and shine there are a few billion other residents and they will be making their own choice of operating system. Compatibility includes them.
As long as you don't have to administer it (eg. change OS settings), using Linux is just as easy as using windows. Once you start installing software, and configuring wireless network cards, and using the terminal etc. it gets a bit harder. But in a school situation, you would not be able to change anything, or open the terminal, so it's almost the same, just a different desktop layout and menu. Most schools only teach students how to click start-programs-microsoft office-word and format text anyway...
there is no law whatsoever, which forbids you to run two or multiple os at the same place.its your decision, and so it was certainly in this case...if admin desides to shut down a few old boxes, that the school doesnt need anymore, and replace em with [put your os here], its entirely his boss' (directory of the school) decision.either this story is a fake, or students wont learn much at that school, hence their edu personell wouldnt know a thing bout the obvious... law.
"@tarmithius:s**t salary? Teachers in Ontario currently top out at about 70-80 thousand dollars a year depending upon the school board they are employed in. Thats not too shaby in my books. And, of course there is the 8-10 weeks off a year."Uh.. they start at about 40k.. and go up to 60-70k MAX, after many years of teaching.
Thanx goodness for microsoft! I make most of my money on the side cleaning up windows boxes with viruses and a multitude of other problems using knoppix to save the day. My uncle was a diehard microsoft person and at that time owned quite a bit of the stock. Then he had a chance to play with my souped up suse box. I never had a chance to get on it till he left town. He and His sons are now faithful linux users........ This happens everytime i do a linux demo. If linux users are so full of fud, which are so many people going to it?
Windows wasn't installed during the lunch break. What actually happened was a team of 5 or 6 people came in and took out all of the computers, replacing them with old windows ones.

Hah, I should! :-PIt's a private school however, so I think it should be directed to the Headmaster/Principle.
