theglobeandmail.com — Toronto Hydro Telecom yesterday lit up what is expected to become one of the largest wireless Internet networks in North America, and told Torontonians how much they will have to pay for the service. After an initial free period of six months, the company's WiFi zone will cost $29 a month, $10 a day, or $5 an hour for speeds of up to 7 Mbps.

Our power company is doing that here too in Alberta. They're in the middle of building an IP network to supply customers internet through the powerlines. Great for them, cause they can montior their equipment more effectively, remotely, and they're also using that infrastructure to expand into the high speed ISP market.

thank you so much on this information. I live in Toronto and I have no idea this is going on. I wonder how well is the signal doing though.

Since most don't know this because you don't actually live in Toronto but, for now most home-users can't use this cause the WiFi networks haven't been installed near any of the really residental areas. But can anyone confirm this? Is 7 mb/s download shared across all the users in the area? Cause I can see one dick downloading with bittorent screw it up for the whole neighbour.

Lest we forget much of Canada is only sparsely populated at best. We only have 40,000,000 people and the majority of those people live along the south border and coasts... You could easily set up WiFi in all the major cities and towns.

Try America? So I can be under the draconian rule of the DMCA? Or have the government monitor my every move? OR just be flat out embarassed by my government, or have the world hate who I am based on where I live... or ...or...No thanks, Ill stay up here, you keep your dilusions in check though.
