What about as help to people in need? Think people in china, who want to get information out. They need anonymity or they end up being arrested. On the other hand, it is true, it would still be a crime, just one that we approve of. They might still end up in jail for it.It's a tricky subject in the end, that isn't as black and white that we'd want it to be.
Some people fear for their lives and livelihoods but still have the moral fiber to blow the whistle when they see a government, corporation, or criminal doing something wrong. If you believe lack of anonymity keeps the individual honest, what keeps government honest?
Not everyone feels that we should be more anonymous on-line, but anonymity serves an important purpose. For example, would you vote honestly in an election if you knew that records were kept of who you voted for and might be used against you in the future? Would you report a crime committed by law enforcement if your anonymity wasn't protected in some way? I'd say it's a balance between accountability and anonymity that keeps us honest.Yep, there have been and will always be ass-hats, but that doesn't mean everyone should be treated like one.
It's too bad that anonymity is so abused. For every oppressed victim who needs to hide hid her actions from authorities, there are ten assh**es who use anonymity to commit crime or harass people. http://rxinterpill.com
