phillryu.com — As someone in the Macintosh shareware business, I make the daily crawl through MacUpdate to look for the latest and greatest in Mac software. One thing I've been noticing recently is a renaissance of extremely polished and beautiful Mac apps, so I thought I'd share some of these finds with you guys. Hopefully you'll find some new gems in there!

Quicksilver and Adium are both down in the bottom section for notable apps. Check the words strung together without pictures.

Wow, that is so similar it's scary. I don't want to say rip-off because it is kind of a port, and I don't know or care which was out first.

Perhaps a couple of other worthy mentions are two freeware apps: Cyberduck and Smultron, both of which blend in aesthetically with really nice unified themes.EDIT: Whoops, someone already mentioned Cyberduck. Seconded!

Also keep in mind that design doesn't have to look like you spent thousands on a graphic designer to come in and make this look amazing. Information Architecture, DRY, etc. all come into play for application development and make a big difference. I don't think users so much care about how "pretty" it is, as they do about EASILY using it and feeling like the choices they are making are intuitive. So don't mistake my message here as saying programmers need to be graphic artists as well. There's good reason why graphic designers get paid big bucks they do an awesome job.

That's the app I was scanning for. I mostly use Windows, but at work I use OSX and that's the one application I can definitely say I wish Windows had. Being able to open any application within a second or so is awesome, and it's extremely easy to use. I use it to open programs more than I use icons.

Linux (and Windows to a significant extent) lack the slick, powerful APIs Mac developers have at their disposal.

What are you on man??? UI is about functionality! UI stands for User Interface, which is part of everything we use! Look at your phone and your Windows PC! You don't have to be on a Mac to enjoy good UI Design. I, however, am on a Mac. :)
