It was a stripped down Performa computer and promoted more as a multimedia (and web-tv) device, than game console. That with the high pricetag pretty much secured its doom, joining the ranks of the 3DO and Phillips CD-i.
You do of course realise that keyboards and mice are practically generic. Bar the crappy multimedia keys that everyone hates there is diddly squat difference between them. You only have to look at the driver set for X.org on any *nix that runs it to see that. Apple shipped those because it felt it made a better product. They would have just been able to plug in any USB keyboard in any case.
Have to agree, I remember doing graphic work in Studio 8 on my Mac II while most of my PC mates were just getting excited about possibly moving to VGA and sound! Apple have never really invented much from scratch but they certainly helped push new technologies into the main stream.
