Customs taking my laptop or blackberry isn't technology, but it sure is scary. Not for anything that I might have on there that would be illegal, but for the complete override of: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." As noted in the Wikipedia article the Fourth Amendment was specifically made to counter the "Writ of Assistance" :Unlike the warrant, the writ is generally open-ended, and requires all parties to support the officer to whom it was issued. Its normal use is in support of customs and excise inspections. The writ authorizes an officer to search any person or place they suspect and it does not expire.
