I've tried KDE/Gnome/Fluxbox/Xfce and its pretty disappointing that xfce/fluxbox get hardly any mention in these debates. If you like KDE because of the eye-candy, try gdesklets for Gnome, or adesklets for pretty much everything else (it works in Gnome too, actually).
kde runs super slow on my lappy even with all of the effects disabled..which is the main reason why i choose xfce, fluxbox, gnome, etc over kde. otherwise, i think kde is a great de..looks nice, cool kprogs, etc
