Its probably due to the fact that the American people are so unfamiliar with political figures outside their own country (in most cases even figures in our own country) that they have to label who or what objects or people are in their cartoons.
I am not surprised that TIME released a list of all left-leaning political cartoons. For ones that are really witty, check the New Yorker or The Economist. I am not sure, however, whether they post their cartoons online.
Or you could be plenty old and perceptive enough to have an opinion about them that differs from the general Digg population's. Most were mildly humorous, which of course isn't the most important aspect of a political cartoon, but I didn't find any of them to be terribly insightful.
