popularmechanics.com — This year is shaping up to be a year of technology battles-Microsoft vs. Google, iPhone vs. Android-but just last month, we saw the end to a momentous tech showdown. On Feb. 19, the high-definition disc format war was finally over. And when the dust settled, Toshiba's HD DVD technology lay beaten on the ground-left for dead by its former friends..

I actually see this as a list of innovation rather than failures (excepting DVIX of course, which was evil incarnate). These innovations didn't all take off, but the companies *continued* to innovate. Without Laserdisc, you can bet we would never have had CD, DVD, or any other optical disc format. Without these early tape machines, VHS and Betamax would never have come about. This shows that companies often build on their failures, sometimes even re-using technology, or continuing R&D further, to produce a winner.-Pie

Are you an idiot/live under a rock? You can't seriously think HD-DVD or something else is gonna make a comeback.I'm going to assume you were making a joke.

Betacam was very heavily used after the format war, and more recently, DigiBeta and HDCAM which are somewhat based on the format.
