blogs.business2.com — Which of the United State's 50 biggest cities is the greenest when it comes to using renewable energy? Portland, Oregon? San Francisco, perhaps? Seattle? Nope. The top spot goes to Oakland, the city across the Bay from San Francisco whose gritty reputation belies its crunchy environmental policies.

I like the list from country home magazine better.http://www.countryhome.com/greencities/top25.htmlWhere a city draws power from is only a very small factor in its environment-friendliness, so I think "green" is not a good term for this list.

You acquaint red cities with green as if renewable energy is a bad thing. I fear you.

This article is stupid, as other people have mentioned where a city gets it's power is only a small part of how 'green' it is.

Oakland? Now I know what all those orange electrical cables are doing coming off the Berkeley campus. BEAT CAL!

Pffft. Portland is the greenest city. This article doesn't consider hydroelectric to be renewable, it rains so f***ing much here, I assure you, water is a renewable resource here. We have more greenspace of any city in the US and the largest forested city park in the US. Also some of the cleanest air and drinking water in the US (We pipe our water straight from a glacier on our tallest mountain). We also have 700+ miles of bicycle trails, and instead of building new freeways, we've been spending our federal highway money on public transportation (Light-rail and bus). Readers digest named us #1, and the only negative thing about Portland is that the Willamette river is a superfund site.

Smug Alert!

Dugg! It's kind of sad that the no. 10 spot (Chicago) only gets 2.5% from renewable. Hopefully in another 10 years 17% (Oakland's current percentage) won't even put a city on the list!!

I thought Boston would be using a lot of energy with all of their bombs, unless they capture the released energy to make other ones.

@johnpaul191Actually Las Vegas does not get even close to most of its power from the Hoover Dam, in fact Las Vegas and Nevada only get 23.37% of the Dam's power the rest goes to California and Arizona (one of the reasons LA made the list). That translates to about 225 megawatts to the Nevada Power system, and the Nevada Power Company which consumes around 4000 megawatts as best I can tell according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nevada_Power_CompanyNevada Power Company which provides power to the Southern Nevada area gets most of its power from natural gas power plants but it is working on getting more and more renewable energy sources. Nevada Power is planning, as they put it, "By year-end 2007 Nevada will be the No. 1 state in the nation based on solar watts per capita and solar as a percentage of retail sales."
