a game I could never beat as a kid, no matter how hard I tried, was BattleToads for SNES. I wasn't even close to beating it. The game just kicked my ass. Beating that, in my book, would be an ultimate achievement.
You left out a pretty significant game, Golden Eye and/or Perfect Dark for n64. They were multiplayer kings of their day, and required hours and hours of playing the single player on different difficulties for their multiplayer unlocks. God I remember trying get a gold medal in perfect dark with the sniper, and having to aim with those four directinal yellow "C" buttons on the N64 controller.
I don't play on the xbox, but it seems to me real accomplishments should be more about unlocking stuff, or the satisfaction of beating the game. Basicaly a sticker that you get for getting 10k kills does seem like a waste of time, and not very satisfying.Yeah, Devil May Cry 3 was a pain in the ass. The save points were far and few between.
I'll count Devil May Cry 3 for how good it is, but not because it was hard. Even on the difficulty-shifted US release, it just gets too much credit for being hard. If you're playing on Heaven or Hell or Dante Must Die, sure, it's tough even with alternate costumes. Very Hard mode would probably require serious grinding on the first level from a fresh start. But Normal (actually Hard) Mode is definitely beatable, and Easy (Normal) isn't exactly painful. That said, playing through DMC3 is good training for pretty much every other game, and Bloody Palace with Vergil in the special edition nearly blew off my thumbs.
Haha. Yeah the end boss was extra hard for me, I remember I got most of the upgrades for the other characters with lupus. So at the end when I was forced to use the other characters I had a hard time.

except in GoW2, those 100k kills can be any enemy. in GoW1 the 10k kills have to be online vs. kills.
