The average cost of healthcare insurance for a family of four is now over $12,000 per year. Many employers are also drastically cutting back on what they pay, and some are eliminating all health insurance benefits because of the high cost. For retirees (like me) who have already retired but not yet old enough to qualify for Medicare, the insurance premiums are SKYROCKETING. During the last 6 years, I've seen my costs go from $117 per month to $522 per month. Many people in my position can no longer afford to pay these high rates.To make matters worse, the Republicans changed the bankruptcy laws a few years ago. If you don't have enough medical coverage, just ONE major medical bill can force you to lose your home now. These are scary times for people who can't afford to pay the high insurance rates, or who do pay but still don't have enough coverage for a major medical expense.We need some MAJOR changes in how we approach healthcare in the US. since it is becoming unaffordable for more and more people each year. Tom DeLay and his Republicans buddies seem to think that all you have to do is go to an emergency room once your health is in crisis mode. That's insane and you'll still get stuck with a HUGE medical bill that could wipe you out and make you homeless.Sorry for ranting on and on about this, but healthcare issues are something us older folks are VERY worried about right now. If you ever plan on retiring someday, then YOU should be worried about it too.
