Condensed version: single tip:1. Ask yourself if you are a linux hobbyist who wants to spend your spare time dealing with a process ( getting and keeping Gentoo working ) instead of the results - using linux as a means to an end. If your answer is "no" get an easy distribution on good hardware to get almost the same results. Ubuntu is the current darling for free(as in beer) and ease of use.
