I've found that having a common name is a mixed blessing when it comes to your personal brand. On the one hand, it's great for privacy since it can be hard for people to find you because there are so many others with the same name filling up the Google results. On the other hand, being hard to find isn't so good if you're, say, interested in getting job offers. That's why, in order to insure their future success, I'm going to give my children completely unique, yet potentially very visible names such as Apple Stock Price Jones.
Getting your own name as a domain is certainly a smart thing to do. My name is unfortunately shared by a couple of small-time thieves, and until recently they were coming up first in Google.
