Is that the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy I see looping up to the right corner at the beginning of the video? If so, then this is truly a cool video for catching it.
I always enjoy having an intellectual discussion with someone who does not resort to "your mom" jokes or insults. I hope to have other such moral and existential discussions with you and others who are willing in the future.I suppose what I'm really trying to say is that, sure, life may be pointless (I assume there is no God), but we can make discoveries that can be passed on to the next generation. It is therefore not that I trust in the fact that there will be an afterlife, but that the contributions I make to society will carry over onto the next generation ad infinitum (assuming we don't kill ourselves first). Therefore, I believe in the "promise of the future" like some people believe in the afterlife: things will be better there. However, if we do discover (and I hope we do) other species of life as intelligent (or more so or less so) as we are, then I believe that we can grow into a thriving galactic group (or universal, depending on how willing you are to assume our ability to travel through space).I also believe that it will soon be possible to simulate a human brain on a computer, thus initiating the technological singularity and the eventual merging of machines with computers. With this advance, it may be possible to finally realize how stupid we have been in the past (what with wars and such) and realize that we can achieve great things if we put our minds to it.Of course, then the heat death of the universe sets in and, as the great Shelley wrote:"Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'Nothing beside remains. Round the decayOf that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,The lone and level sands stretch far away".However, this idea causes many people, including myself, mental distress and great sadness. However, I'm an inherent optimist, which keeps me thinking of the old carpe diem (eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die). I mean, sure it's all temporary, but why not enjoy it?Many people ask why, I ask why not?
