linux.com — My Series 1 TiVo is getting old, so I am planning an escape route based on MythTV, a free software system that turns an old computer into a personal video recorder. This week I tested three MythTV-specific Linux distributions: KnoppMyth, MythDora, and MythBuntu..

Gee, are you volunteering to fix the issues with MythMusic? Get over it, no one is getting paid for any of this. Coders apply their skills to what they know, so it appears there are not many coders for MythMusic.Ask for a refund and move on.

Hell, I'm all about both the political and tech articles. What I hate are those chain-email posts.

Compiling from source vs using RPM's are two different beasts altogether. I am surprised that you would go from compiling MythTV source on Gentoo to Windows MC. Anyways, sure Windows Media Center is a perfectly valid option that I am sure works for many people. I personally grew tired of DRM and product activation. I understand the need for content protection but I just feel that Microsoft has crossed the line in that their anti-piracy tactics has negatively impacted the quality of their software. Windows would probably be a decent OS if they removed all anti-piracy code (It would probably be half the size too)

I would love to have a cheaper or free alternative to updating my Tivo box - is there any service that will update the tivo guide?

I used Fedora before MythDora was available with the help of that same guide and have been using it ever since. It wasn't all that difficult to do, mostly you just use yum (the fedora package installer) to install everything and put some lines into a few config files. Its certainly not as easy as Windows, but it wasn't too hard for me to do without hardly any previous Linux experience. Of course, when I had problems I had no clue what went wrong and I ended up re-installing a few times, but it only takes me a couple of hours to do now. I dual boot that machine with Windows MCE and sometimes wonder if it was a waste of effort, but its nice having the flexibility of Myth, and its been running solid for about 6 months now with no major issues. Also, I can do QAM, which wasn't available at the time and still isn't *officially* supported by MCE (yes, I know you can get HDHomerun to do it, and yes I have one but I was too lazy to get it working on MCE since Myth was already working fine).

To all the people above who are advising the OP to stop whinging and start coding.... That's exactly what I did about about 3 months ago. The result is Gloss, a drop-in replacement for the Myth Frontend that uses OpenGL 2d from the ground up. It also includes a slideshow feature similar to iPhotos which automatically plays music over the top. Its pretty early on in its life, but check it out at <a class="user" href="http://gloss-mc.googlecode.com">http://gloss-mc.googlecode.com</a>

It doesn't take very long as you don't need many packages. Stage3 gives you a lot, then you just compile qt, mythtv, mysql, etc... and their dependencies. It really doesn't take that long. I have a box that has a 1 GHz CPU, not much more than yours and it does just fine. I use ccache too to speed it up a bit. If it is a mythtv box you don't want to re-compiling much anyways after installing since any upgrade might bring your system down.

When The Machinist was first being talked about after its release in festivals around the country, the talk amidst all movie-goers was Christian Bale's dramatic weight loss. Standing 6' exactly (according to IMDb.com) and normally weighing at 185 pounds, it was a shock to view his body withering away in this role. <a class="user" href="http://www.advanceddatarecovery.co.uk/">http://www.advanceddatarecovery.co.uk/</a><a class="user" href="http://www.easyrecovery.co.uk/">http://www.easyrecovery.co.uk/</a><a class="user" href="http://www.TechCHAKRABORTY.com/ChalaTata">http://www.TechCHAKRABORTY.com/ChalaTata</a><a class="user" href="http://www.Technologycelebrate.com/celebrateTechnology">http://www.Technologycelebrate.com/celebrateTechno ...</a>
