"reliance on the status quo" = current energy policy, basically oil and coal. the current energy conglomorates have no desire to break up their stranglehold on the market... if new technology emerged, it would make their infrastructure obsolete, so they are happy to maintain the status quo. big companies buy up the little guys like this and squash their ideas so they can maintain manipulation of the market.
