Photon mapping actually. A Photon map is generated, recursively emitting photons from every light source in the scene, and every surface they hit (with limits of course) until some limit of reality is reached. In the ray tracing itself (the final step of the process), these photons are then gathered to compute the actual color of each position in the scene seen by the camera.
