splicetoday.com— The 2000s never gave us a generation-defining cultural movement, but we did gain the power to ignore the mainstream.

I definitely agree on the point that there is no real unified popular culture anymore. The rise of the internet has played a huge role in this. In the heyday of MTV, the TV networks would tell you what was cool, and all you could do was take it or leave it. Now we can find our own favorite bands. The mainstream media are no longer the "gatekeepers of cool". Because of this, it seems there could never be another Beatles. No one person or group will be as likely to receive that "bigger than Jesus" status in our culture. I guess in a way, the biggest star of this generation is... us. And that's kinda scary.
9/11 has only defined our culture negatively, although it had the potential to bring us all together (America and the world), and it did for a little bit of time. Then Bush f**ked it up and tore the country apart across political lines.Let's hope the next four years see a marked improvement.
