Blu-ray is Sony.HDDVD is an open format, backed by Microsoft and others.Do you like Sony? I personally do not, and use hard drives for mass storage... plus HDDVD discs are cheaper (to buy and to adapt current DVD construction lines)

You do realize that the movie size of both is almost identical, right? They are both encoded in the same or similar video and audio compression formats. It's only the extra contents that differ.

Well actually, they probably knew BluRay is more expensive. So obviously they took the thing which would sell for the most.
