timesonline.co.uk — Five years after the Taliban were ousted from Kabul, the number of Afghan women setting fire to themselves because they cannot bear their lives has risen dramatically... More than half of all girls are married off before the age of 16, some as young as six. The women are regarded as commodities rather than wives and are often treated like slaves.

Well... They are going to die one way or another, either by the husbands hand or they can take his right away and destroy themselves. So if they even survive such a horrible thing he will want nothing of this property.. :/We take alot of things for granted and alot of people do not understand how horrible it is.. And it honestly is.But betterth there was a time when American women were enslaved to their husbands so to say they never were is incorrect.. :/But I agree they are worse off seeing as the men clap each other on the back for it instead of frowning.. :(Would like to point out I still think a bringer of life should count for a lot more than it does.. :P

Other countries suck.

i've spent a lot of time in countries like these working for NGO's and, as bad as it sounds, it is not our right to meddle with their customs. "We" don't think it's right by any means and one would be hard pressed to say that it is right, regardless of customs, but that doesn't mean that we have the right to make these changes and judge them. By trying to force our beliefs on them, we could be the cause of these suicides, simply because they are realizing what other countries are doing and feel short-changed.

Sir, do you think the Civil Rights movement in the US was meddling with the culture of the south and because it was forcing another culture on them it was wrong to do?Cultures can be wrong. Period. A terrible practice is not suddenly okay just because it is cultural.Cultural relativism is bulls**t. This is a case of real victimization, and the cultural basis for it does not make it okay any more than the cultural origins or basis of Southern segregation and discrimination and hatred against blacks made that okay.

@VolatileWhimsy, I'm not implying that the Muslims were responsible for all technological advancements. Where did you get that idea? My point is, many influential scientists were Muslim or came from Muslim nations (this includes Jews). This has changed though...

wow! what do you think the point was..I try to say and show how slavary is wrong. now what are you guys trying to say?!violent nation, wow have you ever studied historical documentsand done reseach before you say random word without meanings?! please, be open minded, and all ways study oreven go somewhere you wanted to learn about and learn fromthem first hand instead of others tell you how thier lives are.please learn first hand. And if you think you know so much, how come Islam says "Women are domestically more greater thanof Men" (1) example her reason to give birth. and there are alot of women that are smarter than men that's real duah, go to your colleges yeah... proof right there...Stop saying things that are all ready true and you still are trying to make an arguement about it.

typical american thinking that they are on top of the World. stupidity has nothing to do with it. i'm pretty sure it's been proven over and over again how stupid some americans can be with actually understanding what goes on outside of their little country.

Dips**t, the Taliban are sneaking in there to kill and conquer Afghanis, and you want to bomb Afghan cities for that? They're the f**king reason we want to get rid of the Taliban. You're insane. By that line of brilliant reasoning, we should have MOAB'd New York to scare Al Qaeda off.

No, it was actually because they didn't hand over the al qaeda leadership. Secondarily, it was to stop human rights abuses of PEOPLE in general, not just women.
