Oh man, I would personally love to have this. This is one of those features that you could simply turn on or off and make everyone happy. Mr Jobs, I know you're reading this.
They probably held out on the software so they can put a generation 2 of the same iPhone hardware, just with that application on it. Then they will charge you poor suckers around the same price or slightly more for marginal improvements which they could have easily put on the first iPhone. Gotta love business.
Spot on! I tend to read my home and work emails on two different machines and my iPhone but it is really annoying when the iPhone doesn't recognise POP email as read.

The screen is too small? The only way to make it bigger would be to make the iPhone bigger. How big would you like the iPhone to be?

Just like the two button mouse, the two pane UI was found to be too complicated for most Apple users.
