examiner.com — I will bet good money that you have heard the advice ?If you shoot an intruder on the porch, the first thing you do is drag him inside?. I have yet to meet someone who hasn?t heard this gem from an uncle, grandfather or cousin twice-removed.

Yeah, I heard that one last week for the 10 millionth time. It was as stupid then as it was the very first time. Pray that you never are forced to use deadly force. However, if it ever does become necessary, do it clean & do it right. I'm fortunate enough to live in Alabama where the law still understands the citizen's right to defend his/her self, family, and home. When I had to defend my home the cops backed me up 100%.

I agree completely. Someone attacks you and when you fight back and hurt them, people judge YOU? WTF? I hope everyone has seen the images of certain cops that were cut up by thugs with knives. I have, and they are gruesome. Deep gashes all over this one cop's back. People judge police for shooting a criminal who (only) had a knife drawn, they say the cop wasn't justified in using his gun. Bulls**t. You pull a knife on me, and I am going to pull my .45 on you. I'm not a trained knife fighter, so I'm going to use MY weapon of defense.Besides, am I God? Am I capable of reading this knife-wielding attacker's mind? I don't know his intentions, other than that he is probably going to try to stab me, which I detect from the clue of the knife he just pulled out. When did it become my responsibility to know whether or not he was intent on following through with murdering me? If someone threatens you like that, they are forfeiting their right to life.

I thought long and hard about getting my Kentucky Concealed Carry due to just this sort of confused and troubling "advice" I'd heard over the years. Thankfully, the required classroom work makes the situation pretty clear. Just for the record... You better fear for your life or from imminent suffering of serious bodily harm from a person who is armed or otherwise capable of causing that harm. For one thing, unless you are without conscience, you don't really want the death of another human being on your hands. For another, even if the shooting/death is ruled Justifiable, you may STILL be liable in Civil Court... where the standards of proof are much different. You may have a justifiable kill, but still end up owing everything you have or ever will have to the criminal's family!
