nytimes.com — Andrew M. Odlyzko, a professor at the University of Minnesota who tracks the growth of the global Internet, added, “We discovered the Internet, but we couldn’t keep it a secret.” While the United States carried 70 percent of the world’s Internet traffic a decade ago, he estimates that portion has fallen to about 25 percent.

Can you not read? He said an Englishman created the WEB. The WEB is not the INTERNET. So Zcott is 100% correct, and not the slightest bit wrong. So yes, the internet (as in the network) was created by an American team (such as the great Vint Cerf and others) and was the very low level stuff, TCP etc. However the web, as in websites and hypertext as you say, was developed many years later by Berners-Lee. When most people use the internet, they are using the web. So some people seem to have forgotten the difference. (Unless of course you are using SMTP/IMAP e-mail etc).

You're both wrong. Gopher (<a class="user" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopher_(protocol))">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopher_(protocol))</a> was in the works before WWW. WWW won out because it's open and more efficient.

It was bound to happen. Foreign countries usually have faster internet speeds, which would also lead to faster development and more traffic.
