codinghorror.com — "Between my server and my Windows Media Center home theater PC, I have at least two PCs on all the time at home. Have you ever wondered how much it's costing you to leave a computer on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?"

Here's a computer that draws 0.05 to 3 watts. If all you did was go on the internet, it would work.<a class="user" href="http://www.compulab.co.il/all-products/html/products.htm">http://www.compulab.co.il/all-products/html/products.htm</a>

Running these programs is not free, a CPU uses up much more electricity under load then when at idle.

@ez12a:Every windows machine I try to sleep always has something barf when I sleep it, and many refuse to wake back up. Every mac I have owned has gone to sleep and woken up with no problem running anything. Also, windows sleep doesn't seem to be as energy efficient as OS X's sleep, my windows laptop would last maybe 24 hours in sleep, while when I had my old iBook (colorful one) I could leave it in sleep for days and still have a good bit a battery left, and the same goes for my Macbook Pro.

RE: "To you realize that each time you power down, power up, power down, power up etc your PC that it causes much more damage to hit than paying the bill to leave it on. Your Hard driver alone expands when it warms up, and contracts when you turn it off. By the time you have "saved this money" you will need to pay for new parts thanks to the wear and tear you have caused on your own machine."That's actually an old wives tale. There's no data that really suggests that.

Hell, that's not near as bad as I thought it would be. I leave my home PC on 24/7. I don't like waiting for boot up if i need to do something on it. Plus in the winter it helps my furnace keep up :)~Gear <a class="user" href="http://www.gearsguide.com">http://www.gearsguide.com</a>
