guardian.co.uk — Beijing featured the fastest man in history, the greatest Olympian of all time and the most thrilling British performance in living memory: London has a lot to live up to. Here is a snapshot of what made the Games great this year

The picture in question has been retouched in my opinion. Look at the red camera looking thing on the grey pole on the right side of the track near the finish line. The base is in focus, but the top is WAY out of focus. Also compare that to the camera dolly on the right side of the track and where its focus is. The plane of focus is just too varied. The photographer may have gotten a shallow depth of field with a f2.8 aperture lens or a tilt-shift, but the select focus effect is definitely enhanced. Not that there is anything wrong with that in this case. it is a neat use of selective focus and one you do not often see in a situation like this.

I never mentioned the American media which all but ignored Usain Bolt during its Phelps lovefest. Not that I blame them. They got great ratings and it was a great story. I just find it funny how the "best" pictures, were definitely not the "best", by anyone's standards. They just seemed to nab random photos of British athletes and tried to use that to sell it their string of photos. I think, and judging by the responses in here I am not nearly as lonely as your comments, 4 of the British athletes pictures don't really qualify as interesting or great, just filler for a nationalistic Brit. It should have been the top 9, with the British hurdler included, but the rest of the Brits removed along with the fallen american hurdler (the relays dropped batons were a bigger story than her or they could have used Coventry). Those pictures I mention included the major interesting stories of the olympics, except the age problem the chinese women gymnastics team had. In short, strawmen are not welcome.

Yep, just as tacky and unimaginative as everyone expected. As a Londoner myself, I was honestly embarrassed by that.

Admittedly, these and many many others can all be considered great moments from the Olympics. There'd be so many to really choose from. Phelps winning by a fingernail would probably be one of the top 10 from the games, but again... so many other moments out there.
