amazon.com— "The back cover copy reads 'Craig Johnson had two best friends, two caring parents, a hot girlfriend, and a nice truck--not bad for a twenty-year-old.' Already we're in trouble."

Again, lulu.com is FREE. Write a book. Upload. Publish. (I'm pretty sure Authorhouse is as well.)While reading this thread what comes to mind most is how many myths are associated with self publishing. So called "real publishing houses" have their own motivations (profit generally), their own favorites, their own style.Well so do I. (I'm self published, so unlike most of the people on this thread, I have also actually published something longer than seventy-five hundred words.)With self publishing, we get to participate in a marketplace of literature that was inconceivable a couple of decades ago. Just as the marketplace of ideas is subject to competition, so is the marketplace of self-publishing. The process will inevitably improve the canon, and when they give a Pulitzer to someone who self-published, all you haters may realize that "real publishing houses" are just gatekeepers, sort of like INS. Some illegal aliens get amnesty and turn out to be far more worthwhile citizens that their counterparts who showed up on the Mayflower. It is not always delusional to go out on a limb and believe in yourself, though I imagine if you have never done it, the fact that another individual may do so with happy confidence may make you sick.I've had plenty of negative feedback, along with diplomatic feedback and positive feedback- not afraid of it at all. That's not arrogance, it's confidence. What does scare me is how this thread, at first funny because it was teasing a silly review, reveals such a disgust for self publishing.Do many of you have rejected manuscripts on the night stand? Or you actually just don't have the discipline to complete a work, perhaps, and resent someone who does (even if you think it sucks)?Tell you what- self publishing went so well for me, now I have my own publishing company.Send me your manuscripts and let me decide if they are worthy... arbitrary much?Perhaps, but that is what many of you are defending.
