I think most reasonable people want to protect the environment, but it looks bad when all the folks spreading the message -- and demanding new laws that the rest of us may suffer under -- don't live by it, themselves. Having celebrity hypocrites fashionably attach to your program is a dangerous business in general; while it can promote your cause, it also tends to commoditize and cheapen it. One could even argue that celebrity environmentalism has caused folks who might be receptive to the message to reject it as another PC farce.
