here to stay? I wish! look at congress, right now it may be mainly to save face in the eyes of ultra-conservatives, but they have been wanting and moving to ban abortion for a while.Imagine how rediculously stressed the foster care system would be if there were no abortions (as if it's not bad enough now).
I believe St. Augustine advocated for celibacy for everyone. Other groups have had the same idea, but, of course their beliefs never caught on much because the followers were not procreating. If I remember correctly, you should never have pleasure during sex, that's a sin.
>manifested in the free will not to be a slave to animal desirewhat the f**k does this mean? i always resist the desire to slap the s**t out of the next person who bases anything on religion. doesn't mean they don't deserve it. did you know that the profile of a typical pedophile is super religious. conservative. authoritarian. i guess you'all have a lot of odd things to resist. no wonder you are obsessed with such things.
Actually, since contraception has become widely accepted and promoted in western society, unwanted pregnancys have DRAMATICALLY increased. So basically, the more acceptance of contraception, the more unwanted pregnancies, the more abortions, more divorce (yes i'm a loon aren't i) and the more suffering.
I posit that one of the reasons our society is nearly incapable of having productive discourse on this and many other issues is because everyone assumes that making a case for one's preference necessarily means you mean to impose it on everyone. Why is this? Because we live in a world where government coercion is expected and accepted.
"Because the more babies that are born to Catholic homes the more Catholics there are in the world, and therefore the more tithing Catholics there are. This is to better suit the Church's needs!!"Conservative ditz Maggie Gallagher wrote an article long long ago that all major religions have a chastity ideal. I sent her an email outlining that it's only because they bred themselves into the majority. She never even acknowledged my message. Hell, Bob "Penny-Per-Pixel" Metcalfe even sent me a "Thank you for your thoughts" note.Anyway. You can't get customers if they don't need your product. So by banning the competition's way of relieving poverty and misery due to unintended pregnancy, churches can indirectly create victims to rescue from despair, poverty and misery. Neat trick, huh? Nope, just good old evonomic interventionism.Isn't it mind-boggling that at the moment evolutionary fitness in humans is actually _increased_ by emotionally, physically (hello Southern Baptists!), and (anti-)sexually abusing children?
We are just animals. Sex is just like eating. If you have sex with anyone you want you may be a rapist and if you eat anyone you want you will be a cannibal. This is off topic, however.
The same tired old paranoia. If you don't agree absolutely and without question, if you see even the slightest moral ambiguity, then you're a religious nutcase, woman-hating oppressor. They refuse to acknowledge that maybe their hated opponents are even just 1% right. Therefore, they can never accept the truth that the most important factor in unwanted pregnancy is not access to contraception, but social mores within peer groups .
Did your comment have anything to do with mine?I grew up catholic and spent several years living with a former seminary student. I'm well aware of catholic theology and it has nothing to do with this point. The question is why do catholics and many other religions that disagree on almost everything else come up with different reasons to oppose sex and other pleasureable activities. I was providing a psychological explanation.
Obviously catholics don't object to all pleasure and I was never claiming anything of the kind. I am well aware of the recent encyclicals talking about how married couples should celebrate in the joy of sexuality. I've actually had trouble tracking down any explicit statement against masturbation since vatican II but I may just have missed it.Also saying that these sorts of sex are bad because only sex in marriage is good isn't an explanation of why they are bad it is just a way to succinctly say what is bad. Also it doesn't explain why other forms of in marriage consequence free sex are frowned upon (condoms, anal/oral). In general the catholic church frowns on any sex that is not the TYPE of sex that in healthy young people could produce children.Sure they provide different explanations for many of these things but it is an amazing coincedence that these are exactly the same things other religions ban for other reasons. I mean do you really mean to tell me that you haven't noticed that religions tend to ban hedonistic lifestyles. There are even studies showing religions attract more followers when they do so.
You're all correct. There's one method that satisfies both contraception and the most "natural method" with the least interference.I recommend:www.healthybirthcontrol.com to my female patients. They love it. There are no side effects and it has the same effectiveness as the birth control pill - and it does not interfere with any natural cycle which makes it ideal in addressing religious concerns. My article in Vitality magazine will show you the most common side effects:http://www.vitalitymagazine.com/apr_08_birthcontro ...to your healthPD

@allthewhileCrystal Clear. Probably the most coherent explanation of the catholic teaching on sex I have read in these comments so far.

MrPeach: "Abortion is not a left or right issue, it's a human one."Exactly, it is all about humans getting killed and massacred.
