For linux, GTKpod will sync and get playcounts and ratings. It's gpl and should compile on a Mac, but I don't have one to try it on.http://www.gtkpod.org/

After doing my research at some of the links below I found out that you can really get one of these for virtually free. I signed up for the $1 offer to get a Wal-Mart gift card and I have 7 days to cancel before I am billed the subscription rate of $19.99. Then you just have some of your friends help you out by signing up for other offers(then immediately cancel and it won't cost anything but the trial membership) and soon you will be notified via email of your iPod being shipped. Click on this link to sign up and get going towards a free Video iPodhttp://premiumipods.freepay.com/?r=24376884 Below are some reliable news sources discussing this site and how it is for real.G4Techtvhttp://www.g4tv.com/videos/index.html?video_key=8872WIRED Magazinehttp://www.wired.com/news/ebiz/0,1272,68003,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_4

Yeah no dice on getting your 5g ipod to run linux. They changed the chipset again, so it'll be a while. 4g ipods were just starting to have mediocre support; so it'll be a while like I said. I don't know if they'll continue development on 4g ipods, they may jump ship to the 5g. But who knows they do incredible things over at: http://ipodlinux.org/Generations#Fifth_Generation_:_iPod_with_video
