Yeah we think they are arrogant, selfish and rude. I respect most Linux distros and most Linux distros respect others. Ubuntu users on the other hand thinks that ubuntu is the only Linux and think that all the other distros are crap. If someone says another distro like slack or fedora they get rude hostile and even violent. Its sad but true that ubuntu is bad for the Linux community and making Linux look bad. If you want to try Linux do your self a favor and try the other distros that have earned and give respect to others.

@cmost:It's true, us Gentoo users tend to be pretty elitist. The fact is, Gentoo is inherently much faster than any of the other mainstream distros, but it makes you do a lot more stuff yourself. It's hard to use -- something which can't be said for SuSe or Ubuntu. Both have their place. You'll never hear me seriously bash a user of another distro, unless they claim theirs is as fast as mine :)

your placing the blame on the Ubuntu community for PCLinux, Mepis and others are not getting mentioned on digg? All I can say about that is 1) thats just insane & 2) a lot of people wouldn't even know about linux at all if not for Ubuntu. Also if you dont like the Gnome desktop you could have went with Kubuntu or Xfce. Not to be rude but this is a pretty weak argument against Ubuntu and granted there are good ones but this just doesnt carry any wait.Oh yeah Mepis is based on Ubuntu so no Ubuntu no Mepis.

I recently installed Ubuntu on my laptop (since it cant play games and I am a developer seemed like a good idea). After years of playing with Red Hat and Slackware it was nice to find a distro that just worked. Every bit of hardware was picked up from install. I have been really amazed at how well it works. If they can keep this up Ubuntu will become "linux" to the average user. People will say "Oh the other day I installed Ubuntu and its awesome" Which while sad from the GNU/Linux point of view is awesome to see.

"MEPIS was first released in 2003, Ubuntu was first released in 2004.. MEPIS was based on Debian.. MEPIS would still exist even without Ubuntu using the Debian repositories.."umm.... kinda...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mepis

@HerrEisenheim I've been able to boot and install dapper through feisty on a MBP core duo laptop (radeon x1600 chipset). I do get some graphical distortion in the loading screen with edgy, but nothing unusable. The problem may lie with later chipsets.@joebaynhamDid you try booting in safe graphics mode? Or do you not even get to a boot menu?
