lewrockwell.com — The Second Amendment isn’t about hunting, it’s about keeping our government in line when all else has failed to do so. It’s the teeth of the Bill of Rights. And that there are still Americans who take seriously the right to defend themselves against a government gone bad worries advocates of dictatorial social engineering through judicial activism

Do Iraqi's have the right to militias, to keep and bare arms? are there universal truths? Do the "Conservatives" actually believe any thing? When did they start hating Washington and Jefferson? "We know why the Second Amendment was put in the Bill of Rights. The very thing the Iraqis are using there arms for is the thing our founders intended. The people of Iraqi find the US presence more repressive, totalitarian than they did Saddam's regime, judging from the results of our occupation. Much of Saddam's reputation as evil incarnate could have been the product of the US propaganda mills and our war industry.

Yep. Without the 2nd amendment, the rest of the Constitution is just one more political promise.

The Supreme Court once declared that there was a reason why the 1st Amendment was, in fact, the -first- amendment. I think it's no more coincidental that The Right To Keep And Bear Arms comes immediately thereafter. -- Jeff Daiell

@ David Macko & dangfitz. Please reread the article.Note that few people(s) take up arms against their own, homegrown, oppressors, while most will fight to the death against foreign ones.It does not fill my heart with hope of liberty in my lifetime, but it is pretty much the lesson that history is attempting to teach us.Dick

Yeah, I've been thinking along the same lines. Every household in Iraq, by Saddam's decree, had to have a weapon. Being well armed has given the Iraqi people a "voice" in their own nation. The militias, which are in large part family/community based groups that have taken up their arms to defend/patrol their regions, are in existance because of the weapons they have (which also include those weapons cache's ex-Iraqi soldiers know about). It is true that a well armed populace makes a tyranny darn hard to implement. On the other hand, it sure helps a civl war/insurgency survive and prosper as well.

The US gov't went door-to-door taking away guns from homeowners after Katrina, so this is something to think about.
