io9.com — What do Alan Alda, Andy Kaufman, and Matthew Perry have in common? They all filmed pilots for failed science fiction sitcoms before doing the series that made them stars. We look at those, and other scifi sitcoms that never were.

I wonder too. Lister didn't have any timing in the pilots, though I did kind of admire the way they translated some jokes.Changing "like being on holiday with a bunch of German tourists" to "like being at an Amish bachelor party" was a nice change that would work over here. The baseball card line was good in spirit, but it didn't have the timing of Lister's "I've still got that library book" line. I though it was an interesting change though because in the original series, Lister gets the bad news and then is even more down about something trivial. In the changed line, he forgets about the dead crew and becomes gleeful about the value of his baseball cards. The execution was poor, but the general spirit could have been even better in the original if done properly.I wonder if Holly in this version thought that she was "a bit psychic". :)

I for one am glad the Americanized Red Dwarf never made it, it would have been terrible and had its balls cut off.

The Babylon Fields pilot is brilliant... I agree with the people who've said this should have made it, or better yet, could still be picked up by SyFy.

At least they could have rewritten the script, they did the Brit version almost word-for-word.

So the American version of Red Dwarf just re-shot the British version? How stupid...they drained all the great comedic moments out of 'Marooned.' It was all about the timing...ugh.
