Those numbers are only true if you're trying to do something stupid like buying a house. Yes, if you went to silicon valley and tried to buy that same 3000sqft. house you had back in podunk iowa (or wherever), you'd need a hell of a lot of money -- that's why rational people don't do that. I'd much rather have a slightly smaller house and use all the extra money to buy other things that I wanted in life. A $2000 plasma TV seems cheap when you're making $120k a year, but when you're only pulling in $40k it's a huge luxury.When my wife and I lived in Arizona, our monthly rent was only $800 a month, but food, vehicles, car insurance, electronics, entertainment, and utiltities all cost the same.The primary difference among areas is housing. Private schools & daycare tend to be more as well, but everything else is pretty much the same.
