I'd also like to add it really f**ks me off when I've bought a CD on release, only for a new edition with 3 extra songs to be released 6 months later.

They would make more money in the sense that a lot of the people who pirated their movies and such would instead generate revenue from ads.

Imagine clothing makers, shoe manufacturers and software companies demanding that the government send agents into everyone's homes--at taxpayer expense--to search for pirated copies of their products. What makes the RIAA and MPAA think they're so special that they deserve this kind of special treatment?

I like the "pay per month, stream all you want" business model, but it has one HUGE problem, which is that streaming audio sounds horrible. Until bandwidth can keep up with computer and mobile devices streaming is not an option.

Weird... the older I get the more new music I enjoy.

Not sure about a specific article but this comes up all the time. When you buy a music CD or a DVD from the [RI/MP]AA you are buying a license to view/listen to the content of that physical media, subject to certain conditions (not in a public place, not for profit etc). This (like everything they seem to do) is done to create artificial scarcity for a product - digital media that is not scarce.

Piracy is actually a good example of civil disobediance as a revolutionary force. If everyone keeps doing it, they cannot possibly prosecute every infringer, then prosecution of anyone becomes seen as unfair, eventually leading to jury nullification, and eventually the law changes because somebody wants votes - at least that's what would happen in a democracy. Hopefully it will lead to a revolution in intellectual property law, because a) information wants to be free and b) in a world where basic living standards can be met easily and production costs continue to fall, information is increasingly the only thing of real value and f**k letting those imperialist pigs strangle us through another chapter of human civilisation.

While I sometime s do that as well (mainly for documentaries), netflix means you need a connection to the internet, something that is not always available. The average torrent lets you do whatever you want with it, including put it on your phone and watch anytime, anywhere.

Wow, I just experienced that "paying customer" graphic with my new PS3 and the Serenity blu-ray I bought 2 days ago: I was completely psyched that I finally jumped on the blu-ray bandwagon and could finally delete the pirated version off my PC. Odd thing is, the FBI warning (with the blue background) actually showed up... I live in Australia. And while I was waiting for the movie to start up, I was actually thinking to myself about exactly this issue in general - even PS3 games take forever before you can start playing, specifically FIFA10 - it came bundled - that game takes about 3-5 mins. before you can start a match: first thing when you insert the disc, you've got to choose your language, watch the EA logo intro, the FIFA copyright stuff, the FIFA10 intro (all unskippable), and then navigate the menu, pick teams, pick home/away jerseys, choose controller, set any personal tactics, and then finally you get to skip the stadium intro and start the bloody match!.

The cultural shift is not easy to understand for all.
